Background of the study
This study appraises various translation approaches used in rendering Yoruba religious texts in Ibadan, where religion plays a pivotal role in cultural and community life. Yoruba religious texts, which include sacred writings, hymns, and ritual narratives, are central to preserving traditional beliefs and practices (Adebayo, 2023). Translators face the dual challenge of maintaining theological accuracy while ensuring that the texts remain accessible to modern audiences. The study reviews translation methodologies such as literal translation, dynamic equivalence, and transcreation. By analyzing translated texts alongside original documents, and by interviewing religious scholars and translators, the study evaluates how different approaches affect the conveyance of religious meaning and cultural nuance. The research also considers the audience’s reception of these translations, examining whether they facilitate deeper spiritual understanding or lead to misinterpretations. The findings aim to offer recommendations for improving translation practices to better serve the needs of both the faithful and scholars in Ibadan (Adebayo, 2023).
Statement of the problem
Despite efforts to translate Yoruba religious texts, challenges persist in capturing the full theological and cultural depth of the original writings. Translators often struggle with balancing literal accuracy with interpretative clarity, leading to versions that may dilute the spiritual significance or misrepresent doctrinal nuances (Adebayo, 2023). This issue is further complicated by evolving language use and the need to appeal to contemporary audiences while preserving sacred traditions. The lack of standardized translation guidelines for religious texts exacerbates these challenges, resulting in inconsistencies across different translations. This study seeks to identify these challenges and evaluate the effectiveness of various translation approaches in maintaining the integrity of Yoruba religious texts.
Objectives of the study:
To evaluate current translation approaches for Yoruba religious texts.
To identify challenges in maintaining theological and cultural integrity.
To propose recommendations for improving translation practices.
Research questions:
What translation approaches are used for Yoruba religious texts?
What challenges affect the accuracy and clarity of these translations?
How can translation practices be improved to preserve religious meaning?
Significance of the study
This study is significant as it addresses the critical need for accurate and culturally sensitive translations of Yoruba religious texts. The findings will assist religious leaders, translators, and cultural custodians in developing standardized approaches that preserve the spiritual and cultural essence of the texts while making them accessible to modern audiences (Adebayo, 2023).
Scope and limitations of the study:
This study is limited to evaluating translation approaches for Yoruba religious texts in Ibadan, focusing on select texts and translator interviews.
Definitions of terms:
Religious texts: Sacred writings associated with spiritual practices.
Dynamic equivalence: A translation method focusing on conveying meaning rather than literal wording.
Transcreation: Adapting texts to preserve creative and cultural nuances.
